A trader made nearly half a million dollars on the ouster of Nicolás Maduro just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from inside knowledge of American actions.

Market Movement in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January rose in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the president had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which joined the platform in December and took four positions, all on Venezuela, made more than $436,000 from a starting bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. The anonymous account had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before News Break

Trading information shows that users assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the odds had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in betting activity just before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the hallmarks of a trade based on inside information," said Dennis Kelleher.

A handful of other platform users also made significant sums from bets on the same outcome.

Political Attention Intensifies

Politicians are growing concerned.

A new rule put forward on the start of the week seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in the United States, with users able to predict everything from elections to current affairs.

The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
