Both Deceased Students Revealed in the Providence Campus Incident as Authorities Continue Manhunt for Perpetrator.

Two students who died in Saturday’s violent attack in Providence were being remembered Monday – amid a widespread hunt for their shooter continued following the release by local law enforcement of the only individual questioned in the case.

Remembering Ella Cook

The student Ella Cook, a second-year scholar from Alabama, was described as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Cathedral Church of the Advent, Birmingham, which paid tribute to her at a ceremony on Sunday.

She served as second-in-command of Brown’s division of the campus GOP group, as the club stated. Karoline Leavitt also shared sympathies on social media, saying in part: “There are no words. Thinking of her kin and peers, particularly her mother and father.”

An International Student

The second fatality was an Uzbek national named MukhammadAziz Umurzokov, an Uzbek national in his freshman year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.

Umurzokov’s identity was officially acknowledged by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“He possessed remarkable kindness, humor, and intelligence. He had big dreams of pursuing a career in neurosurgery and assisting patients,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.

What Happened

Nine other people were wounded in the violent event in the school of engineering of Brown’s university in Providence, during the university's examination week.

Authorities said on Sunday evening that a man aged 24 detained in a raid at a hotel about around 27 kilometers from the campus earlier in the day was set to be freed.

“A perpetrator remains free,” stated the state's top prosecutor, Peter Neronha.

Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and pursue a different angle, and that’s exactly what has happened over the last day or so.”

Ongoing Concerns

Providence’s mayor, Brett Smiley, acknowledged: “This will probably generate new worry for our community”.

The shooter began shooting inside a classroom in the engineering building on Saturday, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a law enforcement official informed the news agency.

Law enforcement that entered the inn recovered two handguns and two loaded 30-round magazines when the suspect was taken into custody, as was reported.

Condition of the Injured

Among those wounded, a single scholar was released from the hospital, said the university president, Christina Paxson. An additional seven were in critical but stable condition, and another was critically ill, officials reported on Sunday.

An educational institution, a private K-12 school in Durham, North Carolina, said a recent graduate, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.

Further Tributes

Cook was remembered at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A clergyman said, “She shone as a remarkable, stable, devout beacon not only in her youth... but at the university she was a shining example in that particular place as well.”

Martin Bertao, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she worked for her branch and peers,” he said.

Jonathan Henick, Jonathan Henick, said he was “extremely sorrowful” by the passing of Umurzokov in a tribute. “We extend our sincere condolences to the Umurzokov family, companions, and peers and mourn the loss of his promising future.”

Wider Picture

Saturday’s killings at Brown, the seventh oldest in the US university with about thousands of bachelor's and postgraduate students, occurred during one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in the current year, according to data. That Monday marked the 349th day of the year.
