A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties. "Agreement should not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane after the deal was signed. The September revolt was sparked by public anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of systemic political corruption. Terms of the New Political Partnership According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed. Wider Political Discussions Underway In a related event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests. After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a collective responsibility.
