TikTok Offers The Community Authority to Decrease Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Their Feeds

The platform is rolling out a updated setting that permits them to reduce the quantity of AI-created media appearing in their streams. This step comes as the company revealed that it now features over 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The update is being tested over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This development aligns with a surge in content created by AI, spurred by emerging AI video creators.

AI Content on Other Platforms

It has been noted that almost 10% of the quickest rising channels on another major platform only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this output is considered low-quality AI content, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is frequently nonsensical or bizarre.

Based on user feedback that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, ranging from AI artwork to science explainers, and we want to provide users the ability to see more or less of that, based on their own likes,” stated a spokesperson.

Volume and Proportions

The service disclosed that there are currently 1.3 billion videos on its service labeled as artificially created. Collectively, more than 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the service daily, making AI content a relatively small percentage of its total content library.

Customizing Your Feed

Viewers will be able to limit or boost the level of AI-generated videos they view by accessing the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Other topics that currently be controlled under the tool cover politics, style, beauty, and movement.

Platform Guidelines

TikTok’s policies oblige content makers to label lifelike AI-generated content, and it bans dangerous AI impersonations of celebrities or crisis events. Any realistic artificial content that is without a tag can be deleted under its community policies.

Additionally, the app will henceforth add an AI-generated tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or flagged by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is aimed to stop users from seeking to bypass the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore establishing a $2m educational fund for specialists and organizations to create educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will benefit educational bodies focused on teaching computer science.

Moderation Strategy

The video-sharing app has justified its content review process, amid debate over plans to make redundant a large number of safety staff in Britain. The company is planning to cut 439 jobs in its content moderation division in the UK capital, with worker representatives and online safety experts raising concerns that humans are being replaced by automated systems.

A company official stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but AI can shield workers by removing the most graphic content before it is viewed by staff. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by safety staff over the previous year due to the use of its automated systems.

We believe it is crucial to integrate humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as part of that process, but we also think it’s extremely critical to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a lot of the machine support is proving valuable work at speed.”
