Why this DNC Refuses to Release its 2024 Election Autopsy: A Deep Dive.

The move from the Democratic National Committee to withhold the publication regarding its own post-election analysis concerning the last presidential race is stunning but entirely predictable. Opposed to frank assessments, the DNC often functions more like a publicity machine than a political organization focused on building grassroots capacities to secure victories.

An Environment That Avoids Dissent

Unwilling to break with the party establishment's culture of conformity, the DNC has stayed within the influence of the previous administration throughout this past year. Publishing the findings could have demonstrated whether party leaders truly desire to foster public discourse about the strategic failures which allowed the former president to win re-election. Yet, the committee is acting under the pretense that there is little to be learned following the stunning loss of 2024.

"Here’s our North Star: does this help us win? If not, it becomes a sideline issue from the core mission," an explanation that has been offered to justify concealing the report.

Key Issues an Autopsy Might Have Explored

Any valuable post-mortem worth its salt would not dodge certain uncomfortable matters. Among them are:

  • Voter Alienation: Failing to retain of millions of voters that backed the party's candidate during the previous election was decisive in the close recent race.
  • The Decision to Seek Re-election: The stubborn choice of a party leader to run again, alongside a last-minute step-aside, is seen by some as robbing the party's base of a genuine choice.
  • Losing Touch With the Working-Class Base: Amid inflation, the electoral effort allegedly bowing to elite contributors without successfully attempting to challenge the impact of corporate greed.
  • A Gaza Effect: The refusal to adjust a policy position regarding a major international conflict is cited as losing key demographic groups, particularly among young people, Arab American communities, and Muslim Americans.
  • Eroding Youth Backing: Research indicates a major decrease of Democratic support among the youth electorate.

A Record Shunning Scrutiny

The decision to withhold is consistent with a recurring tendency to avoid uncomfortable facts. It recalls an episode in which the vast majority of Democratic officeholder in Congress acquiesced to an incumbent's decision for running for re-election right up until a poor televised debate forced an exit.

Meanwhile, large majorities of Democratic voters had been repeatedly informing researchers that they did not want that candidate to run again.

Campaign Spending Questions

A thorough report could probe questions regarding campaign spending, including how much money were directed to insider consultants as well as media firms over the course of a campaign that burned through a colossal sum during the general election.

A Larger Problem

Ultimately, the blockage surrounding this report is symptomatic of a submission to party leaders who engineered a disastrous national race. The signal for ordinary supporters – including countless dedicated activists – appears to be that they do not be trusted to know what the insiders claim to have learned from a report drawing from conversations with insiders.

A political entity incapable to publicly examine where it went wrong finds it difficult to break free from the rut that proved so beneficial to the rival party.
